They are shy….

They are shy, my two tortie girls, but slowly they are merging with the others here. It is funny when I find them unexpectedly in another part of the house (besides the bedroom). As I enter the room, they look up alarmed as if I had busted them being a cat burgler, then they both scurry, slipping and sliding across the tile back to their safety area. I suppose I must be a scary creature for them being that I am so tall.

Piper loves to be scratched and rubbed. her voice is tiny and she is a talker when she wants her way. Her sister Pippi is much shyer and will hide under the bed until she can’t stand not being noticed any longer then she slides out and stands in front of me as if to say; “Stop that! It’s my turn now!” Then, I am allowed to touch and rub on her- this kitten who looks like God spilled orange paint all over her.

  1. My spooky baby got out yesterday morning and he was around last evening and wouldn’t come in , he was rolling around on tghe ground and talking to me ,but wouldn’t let me pick him up , what are the chances of him coming back in the house ??? has me very upset. he is neutered and shots .

  2. First off, I would calm down and not be stressed. When you are stressed or unhappy cats can feel this. If there is anyway you can leave a entrance into your home open- a window perhaps? remove the screen and make a kitty size hole in a piece of particle board to cover where the screen was then brace it in place. Put inside the room the food bowls and litter pan and see if he will come in on his own. If there are several windows in the room, choose the one where when you come in the door, the cat can’t get to the window to dart out before you can close off the exit hole.

Also look at my website http://www.lost-pets.org for other ideas-

    Best of luck

  3. You can’t- they have to find their way. As long as there is no bloodshed then it should work out. Not sure with the information you left here where you actually have them? Spaying would help- spay or neuter both of them at the same time afterward they should get along just fine.

  4. Hello there, first I wanted to say Thank you for helping these animals. I have a question for you, as I am new to this TNR process. This is my story. A year ago I saw a cat wandeing around my neighborhood. I didnt know if it belonged to anyone, actually didn’t give it much thought. I would say Hello to it and it would just scamper away. SO this year I started to see (her) again, and I started to talk to her again and she actually kinda listened. I put food out for her thinking it would be a one time think, but I was wrong. I always throw old bread and such out for the birds, squirrels, rabbits, so one night I happened to look out my window and saw Catherine ( what I named her), and something sitting with her. I had to do a double take. Low and behold it was a kitten sitting next to her obviously looking for some bread that I throw out for the little animals. I couldnt believe it. Now I’m nuts, OMG she has not one but two kittens. So needless to say Catherine and I became friends. She would bring her kittens out(beaucse I fed her a few times) so of coarse now I see the babies and they need to eat, so I started a daily thing with the 3 of them. Now Catherine and the kitens depend on me. But what if the kittens are girls, Im going to have a tbig mess on my hands. My neighbors would hang me, if a colony of cats started. SO I learned about TNR. I capurted all 3 (Catherine and the 2 kittens) took them to the vet. The kittens are about 12 weeks old and are both GIRLS. Anyway, the vet and his staff are working with he kitens to tame them to find homes. I had Catherine spayed. Now here where my question is….I brought her back home today and released her across the street from my house where her and started our relationship. She meowed her head off. I didn’t know if she was looking for her kittens or just happy to be back home. She did rub her back on the bushes and her face in a peaceful way, (ya know how they do that) but she continued to meow her head off. She would stop went I talked to her and hung out by her bushes( where she hangs out). But after a few minutes I told her I”m going inside. She came across the street ( I live on a dead end, so there is not a lot of traffic by any means) and started meowing like mad again. Now I have 3 dogs that do not appreciate a cat hanging around their house. I had to leave her out there and I feel terrible, what does she want, she comes close to me but I can”t touch her. ( She was a witch at the vet’s, as you imagine). She is a sweet little girl, my heart breaks for her. Will she adjust and find her own company?? I will still feed her, but I cant live outside with her. Winter is approaching and I cant bear to think she”ll be out there. I did make her a home too. I read about using a rubbermaid storage container, inserting a styrofoam cooler inside it, cutting a little hole for her to get into it and putting the lid on it for cover I left it across the street in the bushes where her and I meet for dinner. I put a little bowl of food inside the house I made her. I hope she goes in and finds it nice and comfy and warm. I still have to get straw. I read thats good for warmth as well. Will she be ok out there alone???? She did have a boyfriend (the father of the kittens, cause they looked just like him). But he hasnt been around since I capurted him one night (trying to get her and the kittens) and had to set him free. Will she find him??? I’m praying to Jesus also to help me with her. Shes such a nice little girl, if only she would let me hold her, I could find her a real home. Give me some direction please if you can. Thank you for reading my story. My heart is breaking for her.

  5. Hi Patti,

I do hope that you are not just feeding bread to these cats and kittens? I have to ask because reading your comment that is the impression I am left with. Cats are obligate carnivores and they need meat. They cannot exist on bird food or bread crumbs slices of bread or otherwise.

Your girl is more than likely just stressed from all the changes. They have a different sort of experience, these stray cats at the vet then a domesticated cat does. She also is missing her kittens more than likely.

If you go to the homepage of http://www.felinexpress.com and contact one of the sponsors felinefurniture.com he makes these wonderful feral cat houses. I would suggest you email him and ask about them. Tell him Mary Anne sent you! They are a great place for an outside cat to winter and stay warm.

Feed your new kitty dry kitty food and canned food and set up a schedule of feeding times and stick to it. Feed in a secluded, safe place and she will come to depend on you arriving at the same times, same place and will calm down.

She also may be meowing because she wants to come inside. Dogs and cats can get along- it just takes time AND it depends on the breed of dog. Dogs with high prey drives obviously won’t work out to well with cats and kittens.

Whatever you do don’t pick her up, she could really hurt you. I never pick them up until they give me at least three head bumps, then I lift them off the ground just a few inches then gently lower and release them. You won’t be able to tame her, you can socialize her- but it takes time.
