Silent Heat

Bently has now entered silent heat twice since she turned 4 months old. I called my vet and asked them to do an early spay on both the kittens. I know that they are reluctant to spay before 6 months old, but this heat cycle is making my neutered male Matuse crazier than he already is. Last night, I once again gently broke up his mounting her as she was trying to sleep on the couch.

The kittens go in on Weds and these are the final spays for me. I am shut down this year for bottle babies unless I can find quality homes for the last 6 rescues. There has been some interest for them, but when the people come over to see them, it is clear to me that feral cats are not their forte. One woman brought her 3 year old daughter with her and when Ashley reached out to “pet Prowler” Prowl scratched her. The mother was horrified and the scratch was minimal, but they left with no cat. I had told the mother that I would rather the young girl not try and “pet” my cats because they are previously feral cats, but she said she was “shopping” for a cat for her daughter and of course she can pet them! sigh….. I do wish people would listen to me. I have been living with these cats a very long time and I know them like the back of my hand. I wouldn’t have adopted out to this family anyway, but they sure made a big stink about a scratch that was betedined, and peroxided and bandaged here.

Yesterday we had a plumbing problem. Something was plugging up the septic tank and when you flushed the toilet the drain in the kitchen sink gurgled. It was quite funny actually because the cats would jump on the counter and line around the kitchen sink when it was gurgling. I suppose the cats thought there was a gigantic mouse drowning in the drain. Prowler and Matuse were going into the sink and trying to stick their paws down the drain to catch the drain monster.

Mike figured out what happened, and we did call a plumber but just to pick his brain. Found out that laundry soap makes a hard type of film over the septic intake valves and that is what was blocking the water flow. It is all fixed right now, and I am left with a big box of Cheer that I can no longer use. I will need to find environmentally friendly laundry detergent today.

It is a beautiful sunny but cold day today. Quincy and I walked to the creek with Bailey tagging along. I am impressed with this little dog’s friendly attitude towards my cats and when Bailey took off across the dog, Quince started to chase him, but stopped and came back to me when I called him. Bailey ran up a tree and I think he glared at Quincy as we passed but I can’t be sure.

I noticed that Trav has mud fever again this year. I can’t do anything for him until the mud leaves, but once again it is bad and has taken all the hair off his legs in the process. I will be bringing some gravel and sand in this year to mark off more of the turnout for the horses so hopefully next year when the rains come they won’t be sinking to their hocks in mud.
