Never underestimate a protective mom!

She nailed me this morning, went right through the covering over her (as I was removing her food dish) and bit me right near the base of my thumb. I gathered her up in a soft blanket and deposited her into a nearby carrier so I could tend to my bite. Man she is quick, but I am grateful that she is with me and not the two elderly women who first found her.

I was able to examine the kittens and hold them a bit. The mackeral tabby has a stubby tail that I hope won’t be an issue for him as he gets older. It looks like (and it is way to early to tell) but we have 2 males and 3 females. The white kitties are both females (“I think!”) LOL I have been wrong before.

Changed out the bedding and put fresh food and water down inside new litterpan so the kitties can’t get into it and accidentally drown. Then I let mom back out of the carrier and she scrambled over the barrier to be back with her kittens while shooting me daggers with her eyes and watching me closely.

I will be using Mike’s grabber today to take anything out of that closet and let my hand have a chance to heal- can I just say OUCH? LOL And yes, I treated the wounds immediately and the right way.

  1. You might have a barn kittie in training there, if Momma Marlow doesn’t calm down a little.

We hope your wounds heal without problems. You probably already know this, but kittie bites are not to be trifled with.

  2. Yea, you’re right, even if momma is being a pain right now, everything will go so much smoother with her help. Good Luck!

  3. That is one protective mother. Others I’ve read about are quite trusting when humans come to examine their children, but not this one. I wonder if it’s just her nature or if she’s seen too much cruelty in her life.

  4. My thoughts- she is probably a new mom and extremely protective of her kittens. Although she now bluff-charges me when I go in there- she jumps over the barrier and hangs there hissing- she doesn’t take that fight out into the room. I can easily walk through the door, set my stuff down and she remains with the kittens. It is when I try to change out her litter pan, fill her water or food bowl that she goes for me- because all that stuff is in the closet with her. She doesn’t like to leave the kittens. I can drop a black sheet over her and calm her down, remove her from the situation and put her into a carrier without her trying to bite me. She hasn’t even tried to move the kittens and the closet is open all the time and there are other “nests” in the room. I think she is just so proud of her family- she doesn’t want anything to happen to them and that makes her in my mind a good mom- a little scary, but a good mom LOL

  5. Seems reasonable. We suspect Mamma Marlow’s history with beans was not good until she wound up with you. This could easily be her first (and last?) kittehs, and she is not gonna take any chances with anyone.

  6. Oh definitely she will be off the momma train after this- no matter how cute the kittens are she threw!
