rocks in my head

I must have been nuts thinking I could actually stop rescuing. The other day at the grocery store in the cat food aisle, I ran across a confused girl looking for kitten formula. After talking to her for a few moments, I was horrified to find out that someone she knows had a litter of kittens and the queen had died. The owner, caring nothing about the welfare of the kittens had put the kittens in the backyard in a playpen with no food, no water, no shelter. Too much trouble I guess?

I told the girl that if she could rescue the kittens, I would take them. There were five and I was told that they were bottle babies. 🙁 It has dipped down into the forties lately at night, there is no way a litter is going to survive long.

So the three remaining kittens are now here with me and they are wonderful. Other than a puzzling scar on one of the kitten’s necks- where i swear it looks like someone tried to slit it’s tiny throat! They appear healthy and happy and have been romping in the front room with the big kids.

The gal who rescued them wants the mackeral tabby- and I am favoring the siamese mix that so strongly resembles my dearly loved Kahuna. May he RIP. I lost Kahuna to feline hyperesthesia several years ago. The other black kitty will also probably stay with us because in this area, people fear and even loathe black cats! Can you imagine-

So I guess as long as there are heartless and clueless cat owners, I will be rescuing until I take my last breath and go and join my son in heaven.

Here are the newest arrivals- They need names too….

Also, check out this lady’s wonderful cat sanctuary! Oh for my cats to have the pleasure of roaming our property too- but the fencing would be a major expense-

  1. Marley would be a nice name for the black kitten if it is a male.
    sheba if a female.

  2. hi

soothie is also a nice name. reminds me of a childrenbook i used to have for my kids.
my black kittens always brought me a lot of luck.

  3. This a question to “Rocks” since you seem to know a lot about kittens. And I hope you can answer. We adopted two six week old kittens from our Animal Shelter rencently, a brother & sister from the same litter. Both kittens had been “fixed” 2 days before the adoption. I was so surprised it had been done on both kittens at such a young age, but that isn’t my question. We have had the kittens 2 months now and when the kittens are snuggling and ready to go to sleep, the male kitten “nurses” the female and he does the “kneading” thingy with his paws too. She doesn’t mind, but he will do it for over a l/2 an hour. Is this unusual behavior and should I try to break him from this habit???
    Thank You

  4. You really should break him of this habit because it can cause some health issues. If he is suckling her one time, he is probably suckling her more than that while you are asleep. If possible, separate them when they sleep keeping them in the same area, just with some sort of divider between them and substitute by giving them several soft dog toys to lie with.

  5. hi

can they be fixed at 6 weeks, are they sure they are fixed. maybe they should check it out again with their vet just in case they were too young.
i thought at 6 weeks they are too young to be neutured ,

  6. Thanks for the comments. I probably need to keep them in seperate rooms for awhile because you are right Hissy, I’m sure he does it anytime they are napping, which is quite a bit. I work, so maybe they should be in different rooms.
Carolina, yes they were both fixed for sure. Since we got them the next day it was VERY evident as they were shaved and had the “marks”. They are due for shots so I’m going to make sure that their Vet does a very extensive exam of both.

  7. hi

are you a hundred percent sure kittens do not react to the anastetic and could die ,so then i be off to my vet too.
i wil be going to live in my old street and take care of the cats there.
all the cats dumped are going to that street.-so they will be happy to see me there . but i may call another vet tomorrow ,and get my kittens done if it is a hundred percent safe as we had a lovely white cat once and she was allergic at her young age and got a fit.

  8. I’ve had the kittens for 6 weeks so they are fine as far as any type of reaction. I just felt the nursing thing for the male was very strange and I thought the age of them being “fixed”, was young.

Now, any good tips to keep them from clawing my furniture to shreds? I do the spray bottle, but I am beginning to think they like it….

  11. Hello Mary Anne,

I have been reading your blog regularly for a number of months now. I hope you and Mike and all the cats are OK. I’m a little concerned as your last entry is almost 4 weeks back. Please take care!
