Black Cats

The last six rescued ferals are all black. I am unable to find them homes because they are black! No one appears to want them. They are fully socialized, loving, wonderful cats and everyone that has been here to see them have turned them down! I had a lady today tell me all my cats are wonderful, but didn’t I have any that came in “other colors!” What am I? A furniture store? These are six quirky kitties that have great personalities and were abandoned at a very early age. Looks like my crew has just expanded by six. This saddens me because it means when Kitty Season draws near, I will be unable to take bottle babies. I will have the room while they are on the bottle, but after they are weaned, I won’t be able to keep the balance in the home with more cats.

Right now, I am still dealing with India being chased about six times a day into the kitchen cupboard by Prowler. I have started giving prowler a 3 minute time-out in the bathroom when she chases. Today, it appeared to get the message across and Prowler only chased Indy twice versus six times.

The dynamics of my group keeps changing. It is fascinating to watch cat behavior and how they relate to everything around them. I have also realized that Dash isn’t part of the litter that came here. I believe she is the momcat. They were all in such bad shape when I got them. Underweight, malnourished, flea ridden, wormy. The kittens are growing, but Dash has exceeded their growth pattern. She is twice as large as the others and I find them all trying to nurse off of her every so often and she lets them. I stop the behavior as soon as I see it, but I would bet she is the momcat.

I know It is sad that black cats are still not wanted. It is the same with dogs .Black dogs are hard to place. They appear more intimidating, more mean. Some animal shelters call it the “black dog syndrome”.I am the owner of a chow mix(black with black tongue)I even got her a pink collar and leash so she would look cuter and more female looking

I think it’s a shame that black cats and dogs are not as adoptable. I have several cats and among them are two black females. Both were cast out, alone and scared, but their persistant cries for help convinced me to bring them home. They both calmly lay on the front passenger seat in a regal, Spinx pose, as if they knew everything was going to be alright, and they were going home. Their show of love as if in gratitude is endless. The first one I found still sleeps on my head from time to time. I find their common behavior interesting since I found them at different times and at different ages.

Black cats are intelligent, beautiful and fun to have around. Unfortunately, many people hold to the rumor that they are bad luck, and if they are encountered outside, the best way to deal with them is to harm them. :( I am talking about my area, hopefully elsewhere it might be different. We have had black cats that were put through such cruel and unusual torture that it is a wonder they were still breathing! My latest rescue, also a black cat will be staying here with us as well. I will be getting him neutered soon, but he has blended well into the group after only being separated from them for three days. We are remodeling, so longer isolation was almost impossible. But my crew is accepting of new cats, they are used to the revolving door policy here. :)
