Farewell to Vic the Courageous

This is a hard post to make even though I have only had this handsome lad not even a month- but his blood results are back and they are according to the vet “as bad as it can get.” He is a kidney kitty- his kidneys are failing fast. He has a large amount of blood in his urine and his urine is not concentrating. He has a high amount of reticylocytes in him and he is losinng RNA fairly quickly. In other words, he is living on borrowed time- and all of this because of fleas and neglect! He has a low red blood count (which we expected) but he has a high white count which means internal damage beyond the kidneys. He will meet with an angel at 3:00 this afternoon- and yes, I will be there til the end because he hasn’t had anyone there for him in a very long time-

Kirby has a new address!

Kirby, whose brother Flannigan was recently adopted, now has her own person to love on her. She is living in a beautiful home with a black Kitty named May and a woman by the name of Judy. I couldn’t be more pleased and look for her to show up on YouTube soon as she kept running over Judy’s piano keys- her scales were pretty impressive! LOL

Vic’s Vet Visit

Well- first of all to those wondering. Mr Vic is upstairs to pooped to pop- or is it to popped to poop? At any rate, he is exhausted and he slept the entire ride home in his carrier with the door open. Poor boy.
They did a hemocrit on him- his last one was 14- this one was 20- so he is slowly replenishing his blood. He has only gained 3/4 of a pound though- and his murmur is as strong as ever before. He fought them taking his blood- they are running a CBC and chem panel on him-r esults will be in on Weds. He showed them on the second stick and he peed all over the table and tech- he doesn’t like to be restrained at all. His veins were so weak they did a neck stick on him- and I heard his yowl of protest all the way down the hall.

They gave him an antibiotic shot because he still is sneezing violently. It was sad and funny at the same time- the clinic was crowded so I took a seat beyond the vision range of the girls at the front desk. Vic was sneezing so much that I could hear the girls at the desk go “God Bless You Mary Anne_ (everytime Vic sneezed) As the lobby emptied, I informed the girls who were probably thinking I had brought some sort of flu virus with me that it was Vic sneezing, not me. After that, everytime he sneezed I heard “God Bless you Kitty!”

They gave him some mineral supplements, put him on a special diet and said that until the blood work is in- we won’t really know what we are facing. The possibilities are Vic is a Kidney Kitty, or he might be diabetic, or the anemia left him open for other nasty diseases that are hard to corral and treat. Time will tell.
I had to laugh- when Vic let his pee fly- one of the vet’s was drinking water. She threw the water out of the cup on the floor and flung the cup under Vic and captured urine! LOL Whether or not she is going to drink from that same cup tomorrow morning- even after a long soak and wash is anyone’s guess.

Vic is tired, he is lying in Jordan’s room and I just carried his dinner up to him. He ate just a little bit but he did eat. I told Dr. Steve my concerns and he said to just wait for the lab work to be done. Once we see how his kidneys are doing, his white and red blood cells and his other functions- we will know what we are dealing with. Here’s hoping with time, TLC, prayer and care whatever is ailing him is curable.

Victannie and the Ups and Downs of Rescue

Watching him this morning, I have to shake my head and say to myself that we are doing him no favors in keeping him here with us. Last night although there has been no change in his routine or diet, he began to vomit tremendous amounts of food into his litter pans. This morning, he is so weak and unsteady on his feet- that even standing up causes him to shake and wobble. He also is now unable to put his rump on the ground when he is trying to sit- although I see nothing around his rectum to cause alarm. His stool in the box looks normal.

He goes to the vet late this afternoon. I am unsure if he is going to come back home with me. I will talk to the vet at great length at what I have observed in him since he started moving about and see how he wishes to proceed. I never want to keep a cat alive just to prove a point. To me, even though he is eating and drinking and using the pans- he just looks so worn out and ready to say goodbye.

Flannigan- Now Finley

Here is Flannigan in his new home. Besides having a new buddy to hang with, Flannigan is now being called Finley. Cheryl his owner is in love with this little one and I couldn’t be more pleased at how Marlow’s kittens have ended up-

Finley and Gleepfin

I’ll be dipped…It’s Vic!

He will have been here three weeks tomorrow and this morning when I went upstairs, I found him missing in his room. I located him across the hall in Jordan’s room- drinking from her water fountain (although he has two of his own). She was hiding under the bed- but they weren’t fighting.

I went back to his room and poured out his breakfast and I looked over, and here he comes walking on his own steam- wobbly as all get-out- but walking all the same.

He goes to the vet Monday for another recheck so we will see what the vet says about him. I think he is gaining weight, though it is hard to tell because if he is, the weight gain is so slight.

The smallest bottle baby- Paris is fading. I have been up with her all night, but she is losing energy fast. I gave her fluids and did everything I know to get her to respond. Her rectum overnight turned bright cherry red and became swollen. although she is pooping normally. I don’t believe she is being suckled- they don’t seem to be doing that to each other,. So, I am puzzled and have a call into the vet waiting to hear if they can squeeze us in.

The vet has put Paris on amoxy and I am to dab at her rectum with preparation H pads several times a day. Seems to think it is urine scald- although the kittens appear to be using the tiny litter pan in their box. No fever, but is dehydrated 3 cc of sub-cu fluid every three hours for today.

The Park Babies

Here are the 2.5 week old kittens found in the park. The B/W one is Kojak, the smaller white siamese mix is Paris and the other siamese mix is Mannix. One girl, two boys. The older kittens are holding their own currently.

It’s Been One Weak, Week

Vic is not running around the room, chasing his tail, or scrambling after cat toys, but he can now get to the water bowl without assistance, use the litterpan in the daytime. (He sometimes misses it at night).

He still spends the majority of the day sleeping in the doorway. There is a second cat upstairs with him, and yesterday I left her door open and kept his shut while I was cleaning his room. She came to his screen and he heard her coming and showed interest (not aggression) They sniffed noses and then he laid down again. Today her door is open, his is shut and if she can keep him interested in living, I am all for it.
