All were dropped at the vet just now. Brave tested positive for the nasties as did Wilson.:( Wilson is the kitty I got late last night- she is extremely emaciated, loving but won’t eat. Bad URI including a cough- she tested positive  as well. I know this test is spendy $42.50 but it is riskier NOT to have it done because if they do come here with a disease that is contagious, it can get ugly quite quickly. It has been several years since I have had one test positive, let alone two of them! Maya and Echo (both negative) will be spayed and then back with us later today. Say a prayer for Wilson and Brave, I have a feeling there is quite the welcoming committee waiting for them over the Bridge.

Here is the tomcat that we are calling Braveheart, because he will need to have a braveheart to survive his injuries. Please if you can spare some prayers and throw some change our way- they are desperately needed. he is eating, drinking and moving. I have never seen a cat with as many injuries as he has sustained be as loving as this tomcat is to me. Even with three broken ribs, he allows me to gently pick him up when I am cleaning his wounds- his neck wound is the worst- he has a belly and a rectum wound as well. 🙁  He was either dragged by a car or shook by a very large dog that was trying to eat him. First photo is of the tom- the one that follows shows some of the damage he is enduring right now.

I just got this tomcat in who has a huge hole in his neck. It is deep and nasty and needs a vet, but the budget is low because of a $700.00 emergency 24 hour vet visit last weekend. I thought at first when he was brought here that he had been in a fight and the wound had abscessed and broke open. But after gently picking him up and finding three broken ribs protruding out of his belly fur- I am thinking this mack tabby was hit by a car. I have done all I can humanely do until Monday when my vet opens his doors. I will be there first thing. He needs a name of courage- he is really broken. I have him out in the last enclosure- the one that isn’t fully insulated yet. He is on a heat pad inside of a cage with food water and litter. I have a call into my feline specialist but apparently she is out of town right now- so I am it. I was told the police had been called about this injured tomcat and they just wanted to end it for him.

He has a fever although I am not about to see how high it is- I put him on clinedrops, debrided his nasty wound and prayed over him. I am encouraged that he is eating and drinking and none of the food or water seems to be coming out of the hole on his neck. It is that bad- poor kitty. You can tell he has many battle scars- his ears are torn up and he just looks so tired. Please pray he makes it till Monday and that they can help him to come out of his injuries whole.

I could have sworn that when I woke up this morning, I had 4 black kitties in the kitten room. Now there are ten! I got the call a bit ago and went to take a look to see if I could help, and there was no way that I was going to leave them at the home. They were in pretty bad shape- very anemic, lethargic and full of fleas. I have four on antibiotics right now- they have all be de-flead and de-wormed and they are about the same age as the fireplace kitties so fighting was at a minimum. But now, I do have to say that there is no more room at the inn. Right now, I am feeding the new babies baked chicken livers mashed up with Karo syrup and exotic coffee. That is how bad off they are- There are four boys and one girl and not named at this time-

maybe, instead of having my eyes examined, I need to have my head examined!

On a calendar note, we have now sold 70 calendars. Teresa if you read this- you ordered one but I lost your address so if you could send it to me- I would appreciate it. Robin, Bill, Nancy, Ruth, Michelle, Maureen and Kim all your calendars have been shipped and are on their way. Please if you haven’t ordered one yet- you might consider doing so- it is going for a good cause- which right now is the care of these kitties as well as maya and echo’s spay on Monday.

This is Maya, she has been hanging around a local park and being pretty much ignored. I got the call on her and went to get her today, She is quite friendly, not spayed (will be spayed on Monday as she is pregnant). Someone loves her and I have flyers out about her being found.  I looked on CL but didn’t see anything about a Maine Coon being lost. Right now she is in the introduction cage. We will hold her for 30 days and if no one claims her-we will find her a good home.

She was released back to us this morning, but she still isn’t out of the woods. Her throat is still swollen, her urine and stool still an off-color but she has a 14 day antibiotic  shot on board, so the vet wants me to just watch her closely and see if she relapses, I am to contact him immediately. The same holds true if she goes into heat- the thinking behind this is the original vet that spayed her might have left something behind that attracts toms causing this brutal attack. If this turns out to be the case, the minute she shows signs of going into heat, she will be rushed to the vet for a re-spay. They won’t be able to find the leftovers unless she is in heat- so she is being monitored for a few months.

It isn’t as if we can expect her to go into a normal heat (being that she has been spayed) and it can be as long as 6 months before she shows signs of a heat cycle. So there you go- she needs constant monitoring and TLC until she is back to normal.

She has been turned over to us for care and is in great need of a lot of meds. My vet was dismayed by her condition and said she looks like she has really been hammered by this tom. We found she has a spay scar which is a bit odd and rare that a tom would tear her up like he did. Her esophagus has been breached and she has a really hard time catching her breath. Her lungs are overly congested but the x-rays didn’t show if there was blood or what type of fluid is sitting there. Especially hard hit is her left lung- it almost looks on the edge of collapse. She was running a fever, extremely painful all over her body and I just wanted to cry for her. Her condition was compared to a frat girl being slipped a micky in her drink and being taken by more than one drunken frat boy. She can’t hold her urine or stool, she can’t swallow without retching, she can’t eat or drink. We have left her at the vet and they are piling on the painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotic all injectable, because again, she can’t swallow.

Point blank Guys, we could sure use the financial help right now so she will round the corner and start getting better. It’s really in God’s hands now whether or not she will be able to come home. That’s how wretched she is. 🙁 Please help if you can even if it is just to order a calendar because all monies raised go toward the vet bill.

Just wanted to update: She is not doing well right  now. She has vile diarrhea that freely is leaking out of her almost continuously. She is not able to eat and won’t allow assistance at this time. Possible alternative will be to put a feeding tube into her so she can gain strength back. Sending out a fecal to see if there is something beyond the attack that has gotten her to this stage. Please keep praying that she turns the corner soon. Bloodwork is another possibility being discussed as well as an ultra-sound but I believe the pressure needed to use that instrument would be more harmful than helpful.

Got a call tonight from a distraught gentleman who said their cat (a former stray) was dying. Told me there was a gaping wound in the neck and a smaller wound underneath the throat (indicative of a tom attack) He and his wife and son live in a local trailer park and so off I went.

Anna is a beautiful kitty, she looks a lot like my Scatter. She does indeed have a wound on her neck and also under her chin. I have her here and just did a thorough exam of her, clipped the hair around her wounds, washed and debrided the wounds, vaccinated her, de-flead her she was a mess of fleas. I can’t deworm her, her throat is pretty swollen right now. I also put her on clindrops and to my dismay discovered yet another problem with her- the tom has perforated her rectum. She is leaking stool without being able to stop. This is a type of injury from a hopped up tomcat that some kitties cannot recover from, so Anna will go to the vet in the morning. She is spayed so at least she isn’t pregnant. I almost wish it was that easy.

Please pray for her- the rectum is pretty wrecked and although I am a total stranger to her- she allowed me to mess with her for almost an hour without once threatening to bite or scratch me.

They have been to the vet and he has given us Forte Flora to give them. Their temps are still sub-normal, but for their age, this is common. We are to keep them warm (not hard in 85 degree weather) If not better in four days, he will run a stool sample and test for giardia and coccidian and other lovely parasites. On the way home, I ran into the store in the next town where we keep one of four donation boxes only to find out someone stole it! This will be the second box stolen in a year. There’s never even that much money in the box but it all helps on a $1,700.00 vet bill. I was given permission to put a second box up and will as soon as I can afford to order one.

I am worried for Soot and Spout the two girls. The boys have overcome them and suckled them, so I have separated the four. I have two girls in one part of the new nesting box and the two boys on the other side. I suspect Smokey Joe to be the instigator in this. He is the strongest and the largest and he is by far, one of the most difficult kittens to poop and pee in my rescue lifetime! He whirls around the basin, kicking and squalling, scratching and biting and if you have ever been bit by a 3 week old kitten who is just getting his teeth in- you  have my sympathy. Once he passes his stool- quite easily so there is no blockage or issue, he becomes calm again and lays in my arms looking up at me as if to say “Aren’t I cute?”

It is either Spout or Soot who are sick- no fevers- just one of them- not sure who is vomiting a bit. I have gone back to straight goat’s milk with them for the time being until I can determine how bad this illness is going to get. Time will tell and hopefully, none will fade.
