She is alive and this morning, she is moving!

I really didn’t expect to see her alive this morning and I am smiling that she made it through the night. She slept in one spot all night, and I stayed up with her administering fluids and spoon-feeding her. She peed all over herself being that she was to weak to make it to the litter pans which weren’t all that far from her.

My greatest concern was after giving her fluids. She tried to get up after they went in- and she just couldn’t quite do it. It was the strangest thing- she would try to lift her paws but it was as if they were glued to the floor- she was in a half-crouch never fully upright, then she gurgled once or twice and collapsed! I checked her, she was still breathing, so I put her on a blanket and covered her with a sheet- it was quite warm last night. I left her with prayers.

This morning, when I came into the room, she had moved to the front of the door. She got up when she heard me coming (it’s a screen door) and then laid down so I could come in. She sneezed twice and seemed a bit “loopy” swaying side-to-side, but she was up and walking. I dumped her wet food in the plate and she came over and dove right in! There are two pet fountains up there for her and after I deliver the two spays, I will make an appointment for her and hopefully be seen today. My vet gets so busy because he is so good. Not sure how I am going to be able to do all of this- but will manage. I give Kiley her money today and then the kitty is once again tapped. But, what could I do? Tell Haley to just leave this beauty in the park to her fate? If I could do that- then I wouldn’t be who I am today. I also don’t think any of you would even like me!

Please pray that she is just suffering from malnutrition and perhaps a bad URI and nothing else is going wrong with her. She is such a beauty and when I touch her, I cry- you can feel all her bones!

Here she is her first morning with us:

Parked to die

In the middle of dinner, my phone rings. It is Haley, a friend of mine. She had taken her two sons to the local park to play and said that when she sat under a tree, she noticed a cat lying in the weeds. According to her the cat looked like “walking death.” He was orange and white, skin and bones, so dehydrated and hungry. She managed to give him some food then prevailed on a stranger to borrow a cat crate the guy had in his car. She asked me if I would take the cat.

The cat (turns out he is a she) is upstairs and has devoured three cans of food and one bowl of water. She is indeed skin and bones, and tomorrow when I drop off my spays, I will ask if I can make an appointment to have her seen. She is old- this girl and likely seen better times. Haley thinks she may have to be euthanized, but I hope she is not that far gone. Tomorrow, we will see what the outcome will be. Here she is- I am calling her Victannie. Right now, she is in front of the fan and barely moving-:(

Axle

Axle is my 6 year old tuxedo kitty. He got out last week and came home this morning. He looks “okay” but he is constantly meowing and seems sore on his back end. I have checked him up and down and sideways for bite wounds or abrasions, I see nothing. He isn’t running a fever, he is eating and drinking. I checked his back claws to see if they were worn down or broken (which would indicate he got struck by a car) Again nothing, all his claws are accounted for. When I picked him up, he hissed at me so I know something is wrong. I have him in the observation cage and will watch him a few days. I suspect a neighbor did him some damage, but what kind of damage is unclear. I will talk to my vet tomorrow about him- but with a full load of spays and neuters on the books this week, taking him in isn’t possible. I will only do that if he gets worse. At least, in the cage, he has stopped crying.

Two Kittens recently adopted return

senre

Although I asked specifically if the new adopting family had landlord permission to take on more kittens and they said yes, the opposite appeared to be true. This afternoon Jazzmin and Serenity came back home. They appeared to be quite hungry and jumped into the food tray before it was ready but otherwise they are fine. They are back with their brothers and sisters and hopefully the next home will keep them till the end of their days

Blog Announcement….

Through the compassion and skill of another cat lover, my blog will soon have a face-lift. I wanted to put it out there, that this graphic artist is doing this work free of charge. I had nightmares that someone might accuse me of taking the Kiley/Truman Fund and putting it to use that way. Please know, I would never do that! I asked this person months ago if she could just jazz up the header of my page and she has delivered in fine style. I am so grateful for her skill and talent and compassionate heart! It should be live by tomorrow if all goes well-

I stopped by Kiley’s house and shared the good news with her and her daughter and they were so thrilled. They kept repeating over and over “We just love Truman and are so happy we get to keep him!” So good job guys!

If you wish to keep on giving- please do. Next week the 8 kittens are going in to be spayed and neutered. My vet gave me a great deal. He will do all of the kittens for $500.00. I could sure use the money, but he will still do the work and he will trust me that in time, it will come. These guys are right at 4 pounds and the perfect age/size to find the right home for them-

The Truman/Kiley Fund (cliff notes!)

Truman’s Story

I received the call regarding Truman on August 21, 2007 and after speaking with the gal, I headed out immediately for the location with my cat carrier and gloves. Truman had been owned by a man who had been evicted from his house. Instead of taking his cat with him, the man left in the middle of the night. Leaving his cat behind! The landlord had put the cat into a large cage outside. There was very little shelter provided and food was sporadic. He was fed by the other tenants,. He had lived like this for about a year, and now this new tenant had seen enough. She wanted this cat to have a chance at a loving life.

When I arrived at the residence, a group of run-down tenant houses, the sympathic tenant met me at the front and led me around the side of the house. In the distance, I could see a very large cage sitting under a tree and in it, a white cat crouched in the corner.

As I neared the cage, the cat inside suddenly went ballistic. He ran up the sides of the cage, banging his head against the wire in an attempt to escape. He couldn’t find a way out. The cage had been unlocked when the woman explained to the landlord a “cat rescuer” was coming to take the cat.

Despite her objections that I was going to be clawed up and scratched, I crawled into the cage with my carrier and sat there watching this guy bang himself in terror against the wire! He was dirty, grungy, matted and terrified and my heart broke apart for him.

When he finally ran out of steam, he crouched against the side of the cage, his sides heaving. He was open-mouth panting and the human outside the cage was screaming and freaking out. I told her to please be quiet or go away because I had work to do.

Very slowly, in a crouched position, I advanced on this white kitty. I got my gloved hand on his side, and I gently pressed down so he wouldn’t flee in terror. Then, I scruffed him up (he was so light!) and swung him into the carrier. I dropped a dark cloth over the carrier and crawled back out.

When I got him home, I made an appointment with my vet and took him in. He was a bit malnourished, dehydrated, wormy and flea-ridden and I was told he was “about” four years old. He was tested and came up negative and came back to the house that day. I was to give him fluids and groceries and TLC and he was having none of it. He immediately dove under the futon. This would become his place of refuge.

He lived under the futon except to visit the litterpans. I was over time able to stick my hand under the futon and he would crab crawl over to me and allow me the privilege of scratching his chin. But he didn’t want to leave his security hole, and I didn’t push him. I fed and watered him under the couch.

In 2009 right after New Year’s, Truman came completely out of hiding! I adopted him out to a woman in Eugene, but she turned out not to be the best home and two weeks later after I did a surprise home-check- Truman came back home with me- and yes, you guessed it- he dove under the futon again and lived there for months.

I wasn’t worried about him. like before, I fed him under there and gave him water and the litter pan showed action so he was functioning and not unhealthy. He was just scared of what might be coming next. In April of 2010, he finally emerged from hiding and started lying on the couch. All he wanted me to do- both when he was living under the futon and now- was pet him all day. I once petted him for four hours straight (to see if he was pet aggressive) but he never once bit me and he just wanted an incredible amount of touching and love, more than I was able to give him.

Enter Kiley, a single mom to a teenage daughter and through a series of circumstances that were only led by God, she stepped forward to foster Truman in late 2012. She assured me that she “would not fall in love with him” but she would give him all the love he needed. She has done just that, but she also went back on her word and fell deeply in love with this now 9 year old white cat and they share a bond that only survivors would understand.

You see Kiley has had a very rough life. I will not expose the private confessions she has made to me over the months of my visiting with her and Truman, but suffice it to say that her life has been one miracle over the next when it comes to abuse of all sorts, hardships and overcoming personal tragedies. She was also recently diagnosed with MS and she says that Truman helps her when she gets the shakes and calms her down a lot. He doesn’t hide from her- he only hid for about a week before he was sharing her pillow and drying her tears by licking her cheeks.

Now, she has to move out of her home and go to an apartment. In order to keep Truman, she has to come up with a one-time $600.00 pet deposit! WHO DOES THIS STUFF? It makes me so angry, because if we can’t raise the money for her, then Truman will be returned back to me and will likely go back into shock and hide under the futon again for God knows how many months?

They both need each other- deeply and he loves her and she returns that love ten-fold. We have until August 31, 2013 to raise the monies- so please put this link to my blog on your FB pages or tweet about it to your cat-loving friends and let’s keep these two survivors together. For them to find each other was nothing short of a miracle. I am hoping another miracle takes place and he can move with her to her new place and live happily ever after. After being exposed to the outside elements with NO protection for over a year- he deserves to be somewhere with someone who loves him completely and fully-

Please ask your friends to reference either Kiley or Truman if they do contribute and I thank you for reading this

Two Kittens have found a New Forever Home!

Serena and Jazzmin have a new home! They were spayed yesterday and went to their new home today. There are two other kittens there about their same age and a loving couple ready to embrace all of them. I am so glad they fell in love with Jazz- she is the quieter of the three and even though her siamese markings are stronger than the other two, she has been overlooked in other adoption scenarios
