The noise at the door

I heard the noise over the rain early this morning. A kind of thunk then a slide and a thump. I got off the couch and opened up the door peering up I saw nothing on the roof, only black clouds overhead. As I went to shut the door, that’s when I noticed the box on the porch. It had been shoved into the bushes and I almost missed it due to such a grey day.

With a sinking feeling, I bent down and lifted the lid. Instantly the kittens inside began mewing and scrabbling up the box trying to get out! I quickly closed the lid and shuttled the box quickly upstairs to the kitten room.

As I opened up the box, 6 black kittens tumbled out- FREEDOM!

They are thin and flea ridden, they just went to the vet and were dewormed and deflead…sigh Why can’t people just spay and neuter? Saves a lot of heartache all the way around!

Thankfully, I am still getting hits on my ads and people are contacting me about my kittens. I wonder if one of those contacts “blessed” me with these black beauties? The woman last night on the phone sounded quite strange and said she wasn’t looking to adopt a kitten but to get rid of several- and now, here we go- six more babies. They are about 12 weeks old- and of course pitch black which means adoptability in this neck of the woods is going to be difficult. Looks like they will join the black plague here at home!

At least they aren’t feral!

  1. Why can’t people take responsibility anymore? Once when I was trying to find homes for some kittens a lady called me to say she was moving – that day – but she couldn’t take her cat with her. Would I take it off her hands? I told her no, that she could take it to the local shelter or find it another home. She tried to lay the guilt trip on me by saying that if I didn’t take it she would just have to dump it.

I don’t take kindly to people like that and I don’t take the guilt that they must shoulder themselves. At least I didn’t have any dumped on me though. How do you do it? You are such a patient, caring person!

  2. Andrea,

I don’t know why people don’t spay and neuter. It makes me crazy to go to the grocery store and see people who are giving away kittens who should still be with mom and puppies not old enough to go anywhere! Sometimes even in the coldest weather in a bare box, no towels, rags or warmth available. It makes me nuts.

These babies have been socialized. They are ALL over me. Five boys, one girl. One boy has a white toe so I am calling him Toby- but the others are unnamed for now- their names will come in time. The box was held together by one piece of duct tape, had they all been pushing against the top at the same time, that tape wouldn’t have held long. I am just glad none of them got out into the road.
