Dexter’s Story

This morning, I called the previous owner of Dexter to tell her how he spent the night. (He slept on the bed with me and two other cats.) When I told her this she said she was quite surprised. Said he had never slept with her, just slept inside of a carrier every night. Then she added- ” I have never really ever petted him nor has he ever been on my lap!”

She taught him at a early age due to her allergies and asthma to lay on a throw rug in a stay. Then she would pick up the edges of the rug and take him where he needed to go, potty, to the vet, wherever. If he traveled in her car, he did so inside of travel carrier. This dog is not used to human touch which is why this morning when Mike stopped petting him- he bit him. Not hard, no blood, not even red skin- just a statement “Pay Attention to Me!”

I was so stunned. To have this wonderful critter in your home and not be able to touch him- what agony the two of them must have endured!

We are making up for lost time- right now, Dex is sharing Mike’s lap with Taylor.

The other cats are getting used to him slowly. Fog and Tandem are the two I am having the most issues with, but they will figure it out in time.

  1. Your husband’s lap is going to be a crowded place! The poor dog, and the poor previous owner. She must’ve cared for him to keep him for so long but what a way to keep him. It’s good that he’s now getting the attention he deserves.

  2. Yoda is living with a gentleman who takes him hiking, fishing and hunting. He is either with this man in his truck, in the woods or on trails most of the day. I saw them the other day in town and Yoda about knocked me over, but he looks magnificent. About two weeks after we got Yoda, he decided to eat two hurricane glass globes! Yes, you heard me right GLASS globes! I still am trying to figure out how he got the box of the globes to his bed without Mike seeing him- but he did. I called the vet in a panic thinking this dog was going to die! My vet laughed and said “Mary Anne you have a lab puppy, that’s what they do!” I had to then give him 6 milk-soaked cotton balls to eat, which he gobbled up. He survived, but I decided that he needed a home where he could be safer than he was here. I will not have a dog that is a danger to himself or to others either. I put an ad in CL and I was upfront and honest about what he did. I asked for Yellow Lab fanciers only and everyone who answered my ad all said the same thing when I told them about the glass chewing- yep it’s a lab!

Cats are so much easier! The worst thing a cat ever ate for me was a wool sock!

Dexter is a dream. He is now getting along with all the cats, has the run of the house and other than having to elevate the litter pans so he doesn’t think he is in candy-land- he hasn’t eaten anything that will hurt him.
