I couldn’t believe my eyes…

So I blinked again and in disbelief read the ad on CL again; Female spayed German Shepherd free to a good home!” I clicked on the photo, yep that is a German Shepherd (so many people pass off mixed breeds as shepherds. I called the woman who laughed and said “I only put the ad up five minutes ago!”

I told her about my husband and his limitations and what I was looking for. The woman very quietly said; “Hon, this dog is service dog, a medic alert dog and she just needs to go to a new home as I am in training with another dog.”

We packed up the truck in 20 minutes and headed for Portland where the dog was located. It was love at first sight. Lyra is a dream- she can pull wheelchairs, open doors, if someone is going to faint, she will alert by pressing against their legs and moving them over to a bed or a chair!

She has been here not even 24 hours gets along famously with Dexter. She is a big girl for a female 144 pounds and she is curious about the cats but not aggressive. They have high-tailed it off to the cat enclosure except for two brave ones.

Lyra is an answered prayer and Mike loves her as do I. She slept with me last night on the bed, and when she as to go potty she jumps up and licks me in the face- LOL

lyraNow speaking of prayers, I am getting ina few minutes a just days old kitten whose littermates have all died. The woman who has him was screaming and crying and ranting and she said she just didn’t think she could handle another death- so she is bringing him over. I will do all in my power to help save this little boy but with all the littermates dead- it doesn’t look good. BUT prayers work wonders so please start them flying!

  2. The little one is dead I am sorry to say. He was barely breathing when he got here, covered in dirt and fleas….in minutes he was gone.

  3. So sorry about the baby…..we have lost a few here and mom says it sucks everytime. We know he got a kiss from you to send him on his way.

YEAH for the new dog though….how wonderful that you found her and she will be such a help. 🙂

  4. awww so sorry about the baby, it sounded like a long shot for recovery, Awesome find on the dog, and what a beauty. you look out for God’s little furry one’s this time he looked after you and rewarded you with this furry treasure!

  5. Oh, the poor baby. Has mom been spayed at least? Congratulations on the beautiful new dog!

  6. What a beautiful girl. Sounds like she will be a big help for Mike.
    Sorry about the little one.

  7. What a wonderful dog, and one who will do good work for you and your husband – unlike my beasts, who expect me to do it all. And good luck to the little kitten. If he has a chance, you’ll be the one to make it succeed.

  8. So pleased you have this girl, she sounds perfect, and I highly approve of the name, since we have a very special girl named Lyra too 🙂

  9. So sorry about the little kitteh, but from the sound of it he never had much of a chance to begin with.

Seems kinda odd that someone would just give away a trained service dog, but it looks like Lyra is a help regardless of her real history.
