  2. Just donated.. I was angry when I read Turman’s story..I rehomed my own cat to my daughter who lives in an apartment complex. The cost is only 25.00 for a pet deposit fee. Where does the landlord get off charging $$600.00! Best of luck to Turman and his human! 🙂

  3. I just read about Truman. I’ll be donating; I may have to put more money in my PayPal account (which means a week’s delay) but it’ll be off to you as soon as possible. If it comes after the $600 has been reached – and it looks like it will! – please use the money as you see fit. I know it will go to help cats and people in any case.

  4. Also, that $600 is refundable to Kiley, I hope. Make sure she gets a receipt and that the landlord writes ‘to be refunded’ or something similarly explicit on it. It’ll be good to have that, just in case the landlord tries to cheat her later.

  5. $600 is an outrage, no one charges that. but you have made 600 in no time. Glad to help in my small way. If over please use it where you need it.

  6. Here is their pet policy 🙁 I removed some crucial information for legalities sake

Pets are welcome at __________ properties. Pets are meaningful to many residents as they provide companionship, safety, and service for the families. Cooperation between management and residents is required in order to promote compliance with pet regulations through responsible pet ownership. MANAGEMENT APPROVAL Management must pre-approve all pets before the pets are allowed in any apartments or on the property. Owner and management reserve the right to allow or disallow pets on the property or in any apartment. The following pets (including exotic pets) are specifically not approved: Doberman Pinchers, German Sheperds, Pit Bulls, or Rottweilers, or similar breed/ mixes of pets. ADDITIONAL DEPOSIT There is a maximum of two (2) pre-approved pets per household. An aquarium of 15 gallons or more, or a cage will be considered one pet. A deposit in the amount of $600 per pet will be required before the pet agreement is full executed. This deposit is in addition to the move-in security deposit. The additional deposit is conditionally refundable and may be applied to any damage or breach of the resident. Any services required for damage assessment or damage repairs ill be charged against the additional deposit according to state laws. Additional deposits are not required for service animals. REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION If an animal is required as an accommodation, the resident is encouraged to complete a Reasonable Accommodation/Request Verification form. _________will waive standard fees, restrictions, and/or additional deposits if the presence of a service animal is verified to be a reasonable accommodation for a disability. All rules and policies apply to service animals, with the exception of insurance and deposit requirements. WRITTEN AGREEMENT Maximum of two pre-approved pets per agreement. A new agreement will be required to remove or add pets.

All I can add to the above is “Good Scrud!” (My Dad used to say that all the time when he was disgusted~)

  7. maybe she can get something from her Doctor that Truman is a benefit to her as a calming (service) animal. Truman is there to comfort her and be with her when she is shaking. That would be good if he/she could do that.

  8. I think Sue has a good idea. Now that the money has been raised for the deposit, pay it, don’t give them an excuse to come back on her later – but it wouldn’t hurt to have additional back up that Truman is a service friend.
Secondly, I think the lease and reasoning shows that they don’t want animals but will allow them if you pay a fortune for them.
It also shows that these idiots have no loving companion at home and need to be pitied.

  9. I can imagine that “pets are meaningful!” Especially if you get $600.00 a pop for them! for pity’s sake!

  10. I agree with Sue, maybe Truman could be considered a therapy cat?

One line I especially don’t like is “Any services required for damage assessment or damage repairs ill be charged against the additional deposit according to state laws.” What exactly does that mean “any services required for damage assessment”? And, honestly, it looks like they could make up anything to deny the refund.

    Unbelievable…

  11. I am truly amazed that they also include aquariums on this list! I’ve never seen anyone require a deposit for fish.

  12. This is not at all saying that this management company is in the “right” or that they are anything but greedy b$&@?!#*, but I think it is important to be aware that pets, even single kitties, can do an incredible amount of damage. My family is in the property management business and we require two month’s rent for a pet deposit…which is much more than $600. We are not greedy or being outrageous nor are any of us against pet ownership, we are simply covering our financial behinds.

A few years back we had a young woman move in with her mature (and fixed) cat. At the time we only required the normal security deposit (one month’s rent) and an extra $100 for pet owners. Within 3 months we started getting complaints of a horrid smell. By the time the lengthy eviction process had run its course her SINGLE cat had done nearly $10,000 worth of damage. The carpets, sub flooring, baseboards, door trim, portions of the cabinets and some doors had to be replaced and we had to call in a specific company to strip and sanitize the walls so we could paint.

Although, this is the worst a cat has ever done, I can name at least a dozen other times in the past 5 years where a pet has done 1000s of dollars worth of damage. We could address this by either no longer accepting pets, requiring a pet owner provide a more substantial deposit or jacking up rents for ALL residents. None of the above are fair for everybody, but pet ownership is a choice and does come with extra responsibilities.

BTW, getting a letter certifying Truman as a “comfort animal” is an excellent idea, especially for ensuring that if the property changes hands or the management company changes policy Truman and his people will be exempt.

  13. My sister paid a $2500 deposit to have her dog in her rental home. She ws going through a divorce at the time and $2500 was a large amount.

I am a new owner of a rental property where I rent back to the original owners who have two large dogs. I asked for a $175 refendable deposit for them and no add’l monthly fees. My property mgmt company recommended monthly $25 per dog and $500 deposit.

As a landlord and pet lover I do not want to deny pets but bad owners and ill behaving perhaps unaltered pets could do much damage. Not sure it would be legal to require they be spayed/neutered.

This three brings up much to consider for me from both sides.
