Checking In-

All systems go with Bentley- other than two cats and one kitten fighting an URI- all the cats appear to be healthy. I am not letting down my guard as this virus is sneaky.

I have been given the opportunity to buy 12 cat carriers from the local dog pound for $5.00 apiece. I have thrown away a few of my carriers (after sanitizing them) and also santized and stored the others that held contaminated cats and kittens. They will be stored for a good long while. In case someone who does dump diving wants to take my old cat carrier home with them – I took a large bold marker and marked on each one of them and the litterpans that feline distemper was a danger. I know I sanitaized them to the best of my ability, but I don’t wish what happened here in our home to happen to anyone else.

The new puppy is a handful and he likes to chase the cats outside when they run. He is young, and he will learn but it is tiring keeping up with his endless energy. I have been walking him 3 miles a day with my friend’s pack (she has 8) and he does really well with the other dogs. His name is Remington and he is part Siberian Husky and Lab- pure white with icy blue eyes. He was being neglected and I couldn’t leave him at his previous home.

He no longer chases the cats inside- and he doesn’t chase them with any intention but to play- but still that does not fly in our house. I wish I had his energy though it is stronger than Red Bull!

Here is the little guy (although he is 39 pounds).

  1. I missed the bit where you acquired a dog. He sounds wonderful, though. He gets along with cats – except wanting too much to play; how do they get along with him? He’d make a perfect addition to a cat-household, if they like him.

  2. There’s a group of ladies here they call themselves the CL Possee and they look for dogs, cats in bad situations and then contact people they think can help the animal find a better home. Sometimes, they visit the homes, other times they just gauge by the photos if the animal might need something special. They alerted me about him and I fell in love. I went to get him and asked if they crated him (they didn’t) I asked to use their bathroom while I was there and inside, you could see clumps of wood and paneling and flooring just tore all to heck. No, they didn’t crate him, just shut him up in the bathroom. He didn’t even know what a crate was but now, I just tell him to go to bed and off he goes.

He’s finding his way with the cats. He chases to play, but he is so young and he is smart and trainable. He chases the barn cats only if they run- and he loves to run so once he stretches out, he is in the zone.

The photo I posted was before he came to our home- this one was taken out in our field after about a week with us. Of course he isn’t neutered- but he will be next week!

He and Roscoe had a bit of a war at first, but they have found their way now. I am certain that once he understands the cats outside are also off limits, he will settle in fine.

  3. Sounds like Remington needs a treadmill, or a running buddy.

We would probably just put all those ‘tainted’ carriers and boxes and beds in a big pile along with a bunch of scrap wood, and burn the lot of them. If you have the room, you might consider the same thing. We would think a hot enough fire would kill any residual virus, and that would make sure no one else tries to use them in any case.

  4. Actually burning doesn’t always kill the virus and here in Oregon we are only allowed to burn yard debris and paper trash. PLastic is against the law. The carriers were sanitized and wrapped in plastic and stored in our shed in a way that a cat cannot even sniff them. The really bad ones were sanitized and thrown away with my warning label. I have done all I can do to stop others from taking these treasures from the landfill and using them.
