Meet Matilda

This is Matilda and I know she looks like an unhappy kitty but I think she is happier here than she was at the other place. Her ears are a bit of a mess (but salt water is very corrosive and not recommended to fight ear mites). She loves to be petted and fussed over and she went to the vet on Thursday because there was a possible home for her (but they put a temp.stop on the adoption of her)> Part of the problem is that the vet cannot tell us how old she is. I just heard “She’s old.” But she is minus her teeth so how old is old- no one can really say. She has one lonely canine left in her mouth and the vet said that the only positive thing about kittens not getting nourishment when they really need it, is as they get old, their teeth just fall out of their mouth 🙁 As most of hers already has done so. So no expensive dental work will need to be done, she will just wake up one day and the tooth will be gone.

She doesn’t walk perfectly, again a sign of neglect and age. She sort of wobbles when she walks and she can’t retract her back claws now. She may be a mess, but she is a loveable mess. She is the first one to greet me at the door, the one who wants to climb up on my lap or shoulder and just get all that lovin she missed out on in the crucial years. I love mackeral tabbies anyway and she is beautiful in my eyes, and I will do my best to find a home for her soon.

  1. She treated the cats ear mites with doses of salt water. By the way, she used the same salt water to cleanse Juno’s nose and face. 🙁 He had heavy scabs on his nose that were quite irritated. When I told my vet about the salt water for mites, he laughed and said that she might have managed to drown one- but then when he looked into the ears, he stopped laughing. Salt is very caustic to sensitive tissue. We have decided to treat the ear mites with Revolution as they can’t handle anything in their ears right now. They will all need two doses of Revolution to kill the mites but at least their ears can heal.

On a positive note, I saw Skeets the black feral boy for the first time today! He had climbed up to the rafters and was hanging out with Morgan instead of hiding in the cat house. He is so damn skinny-

I also managed to pet Phantom this afternoon. She is that calico someone dumped on us over three years ago and I cannot get her to go in any type of trap, box or anything. But she is now starting to trust so I hope that in the next few days I will be able to grab her up quickly and put her into a carrier and get her to the vet. She is also so skinny, I am amazed at her resilence.

  2. I love gray tabbies. Paul Edward, my shadow, is one and so was TC, his predecessor. I think Matilda is just beautiful. You can see the intelligence in her face. I’m so very glad she has someone to love and respect her.

  3. That is my handyman George petting her and it was the first time he had met her. Men have a way of petting cats rather hard- and that is why her ears are laid back. She was enjoying what he was doing, but definitely wasn’t used to being handled in that way.

  4. I always pet cats gently until I find out how they like it. I hope Matilda finds a loving home. The more I hear of what the cats went through with that woman, the more I think they would have been better off wherever she had found them.
