Licorice and Kiab

Both kitties went through their spay without an issue and are now back home. I find it interesting that a “rescuer” on the coast who wanted both “pregnant” cats, when I called her to arrange for a pick-up and told her that the cats weren’t pregnant any longer, she said she doesn’t want them now!

I was stunned and asked her why and she said without having the kittens to “sell” she doesn’t make any money! Turns out she pays herself a salary to run her non-profit and she uses the money she charges for kittens “because no one wants the older ones.” I almost told her she should be ashamed of herself- borderline kitty mill but I held my tongue. I checked and she is doing nothing wrong according to the law.

So the girls are here, they are sore and groggy but even not being pregnant, they are still very much wanted here. In case you wonder, I don’t pay myself a salary or my volunteers- George has now decided to volunteer for the rescue! I’m in it for the cats and if there ever is any money left over, it is tucked away for the next emergency. The problem is lately there has been to many emergencies!

  1. people are horrible, just horrible! I might understand an adoption fee to cover vet expense and to discourage those even.more.horrible people. But a rescue that sells? This is the kinda of info that should be smacked across her website rescue blog facebook tweet. Oregon, it’s as bad as CA, isnt it? Crazy, low down, dirty rotten……
On the bright side: not pregnant, not pregnant, NOT pregnant!
    Well done!

  2. Since “—no one wants the older ones.”, I wonder what she does with the Momma cats after the cash money kittens are “sold”. I am also certain that she does not spey or neuter the kittens before “selling” them, since that would cut into her profit margin. This lady is not part of the solution—she is a big part of the problem.

  3. Yes, what DOES she do with the moms? Continue to breed them? Do all kittens get s/n before being adopted out?

The whole thing sounds highly disturbing. It may not be illegal, but it sure is wrong!

  4. I never thought you paid yourself anything. I think you mentioned a while ago that you started charging an adoption fee. I believe that’s a good idea, as it cuts down on the people who put little thought into adopting a cat; some figure that if they get it for free, it’s no loss if the situation doesn’t work out. Even a small fee will get rid of those who aren’t really serious about taking care of a cat.
